MnDOT District 4 bridge flushing begins May 1
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Motorists on Minnesota State Highways in MnDOT District 4 may encounter temporary lane closures as bridge crews flush bridge decks, Tuesday, May 1, until May 31. The process takes approximately an hour to flush each bridge deck.
Every spring MnDOT bridge crews go out and flush all 147 bridge decks in District 4 as part of the preventative maintenance plan to increase the longevity of bridges. The flushing process removes sand and anti-icing chemicals from the steel and concrete structures on the bridge. The crews use clean non potable municipal water to flush the bridges. They flush the expansion joints and bearings to insure free movement of the bridge so it can expand and contract during temperature changes. Crews will also look for deterioration that may have occurred during the winter.
