Rain delays opening of Highway 22 south of Mankato

MANKATO, Minn. – Extreme wet weather conditions are prohibiting progress on the Highway 22 projects south of Mankato.  Paving is complete, but the ditches are soaked preventing the completion of the remaining work until early November.

If weather cooperates, three legs of the new Highway 22 and Blue Earth County Road 90 roundabout could open to local traffic the week of October 22-27.  Highway 22 south of the roundabout to Beauford requires more extensive work, but could be fully open to traffic in early November.  Business access (including the Fall Festival) will continue to be provided via Terrace View Drive.

“Completing Highway 22 work has been a challenging endeavor for MnDOT, the contractor, the local businesses and the residents along the alternate routes,” explains Roger Risser, assistant district engineer for construction. “At one point during the construction season we were on track for opening to traffic by mid-October.  Now the area is so wet, we haven’t been able to accomplish much of anything.”

“We are so close to the finish, but important work remains that requires workers and their equipment to occupy the highway and it would be unsafe for them and the traveling public to have the road completely open,” explains Risser.

Work remaining on the projects includes ditch shaping, erosion control, seeding, striping and signing.  The reconstruction work from Blue Earth County Road 15 to Beauford has miles of this type of work to accomplish prior to opening.

Highway 22 traffic continues to be detoured east on County Road 10 and north on Highway 83 until completion.

Mathiowetz Construction of Sleepy Eye was awarded both the two-year reconstruction project that extended to Mapleton and the roundabout project.

The roundabout project at Highway 22 and County Road 90 is a partnership project with Blue Earth County.  In addition to the roundabout it included the addition of left turn lanes into residential areas north and south of

County Road 90 and a structural snow fence in the northwest corner to reduce drifting.
