Some state highways in South Central Minnesota open at 11:30 am today; many other highways remain closed or under no travel advisories
Motorists urged to travel with caution as blowing snow and icy conditions continue
MANKATO, Minn. – (11:10 a.m.) The Minnesota Department of Transportation is expected to reopen a few state highways in South Central Minnesota at 11:30 am today. These highways will remain under a no travel advisory after they reopen to traffic.
If motorists need to travel, MnDOT urges drivers to use caution while driving as roads are completely or partially covered with compacted snow and ice. Strong winds with blowing and drifting snow are expected to continue through today. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds and drive according to conditions.
Highways open:
- Westbound I-90 from Worthington to Luverne
- Highway 60 from Worthington to Iowa
- Highway 91 from Iowa to the Murray County line
- Highway 59 from Iowa to Fulda
Highways closed:
- Interstate 90 Worthington to Blue Earth
- Highway 60 from Worthington to Mankato
- Highway 264
- Highway 30 from the Murray County line to Highway 4
- Highway 4 from Iowa to Highway 30
- Highway 15 from Iowa to Madelia
No travel advised:
A no travel advisory remains for most state highways and I-90 in the following counties: Nobles, Jackson, Cottonwood, Martin, Freeborn, Faribault, Blue Earth, Brown, Waseca, Nicollet, Le Sueur, Rock, and Sibley. Drivers are encouraged to check www.511mn.org for current road condition information before they travel.
No travel advised means that the roadway has deteriorated and/or visibility has been reduced to the point that it is very dangerous to travel; there are reports of whiteout conditions; and some weather conditions can be severe enough that road treatments are not effective, and conditions can become life-threatening for stranded travelers.
Motorists should:
- Check www.511mn.org or get the free smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store for road condition information, travel alerts
- Stay alert for snowplows, which turn or exit frequently and often with little warning. They also may travel over centerlines or partially in traffic to further improve road conditions.
- Stay back at least 10 car lengths behind the plow. Don’t drive into a snow cloud.
- Slow down to a safe speed for current conditions.
- Turn on your headlights and wear your seat belt.
- Turn off the cruise control.
- Be patient and remember snowplows are working to improve road conditions for your trip.
- Don’t drive distracted.
