WILLMAR, Minn. – A project to restore the Highway 19 Redwood Ferry Historical Marker rest area, three miles east of Morton, has been completed, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. The project included installing a ramp to improve accessibility and adding a new informational sign and an auditory box to assist visually impaired visitors.

The historical marker was installed in 1985 by the Minnesota Historical Society in observance of events at the Redwood Ferry landing on the Minnesota River and at the Lower Sioux Agency on Aug. 18, 1862. Visit the Lower Sioux Indian Community website to learn more.

Lower Sioux Indian Community proposed, designed, and managed the sign project and Monument Study. Two Pine Resource Group, LLC, drafted the sign content and completed the Monument Study. Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway Alliance shared cost on creation of the sign and audio post. The project cost was $23,904, and the contractor was Holliday Construction. Benefits of the project include complementing existing information and ensuring it is accessible to everyone.
