Road closure begins May 19 at 4th Street Northwest in Austin near I-90
AUSTIN, Minn. – Austin motorists will be detoured at 4th Street Northwest and 13th Avenue Northwest beginning May 19 while construction crews replace underground city water main and storm sewer utilities on 4th Street, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
The intersection at 4th Street Northwest and 13th Avenue Northwest will be closed from May 19 through early June while crews replace water mains and storm sewer in that section of the road. Motorists will be able to reach the businesses via the eastbound Interstate 90 off-ramp and return using the I-90 eastbound on-ramp. The businesses affected are Scooters Coffee, Hardee’s, Burger King and Kwik Trip.
The intersection will reopen in early June and then I-90 traffic ramps will close. Vehicles will reach the businesses using a temporary road on the east side of 4th Street during the remainder of the work, which includes replacement of the concrete road and entrances to the businesses. Work is expected to be completed in mid-July on 4th Street.
Meanwhile, work continues at the 4th Street Northwest bridge over I-90.
Beam placement is also occurring overnight each night on I-90 at 4th Street, beginning at 8 p.m.

Safety in work zones
Motorists should always be prepared to encounter traffic changes when approaching work zones including lane closures, lane shifts, uneven road surfaces, slow-moving heavy equipment and slow or stopped traffic. To keep everyone safe, drivers must:
- Obey posted speed limits. The fine for speeding in a work zone is $300.
- Drive undistracted. Avoid using cell phones, mobile devices, adjusting the radio – even eating –while in work zones.
- Move over. Give workers room to safely complete their work.
- Know before you go. Get real-time information about traffic and road conditions at 511mn.org or get the free 511mn smartphone app at Google Play or the App Store.
- Be patient. Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.
- Do the zipper merge.
- Avoid making unnecessary lane changes.
- Never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.
