MnDOT urges drivers to slow down, yield at new Wadena roundabout
BAXTER, Minn. — The Minnesota Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to slow down and yield to traffic already in the roundabout at the west end of Wadena on Hwy 10, following reports of unsafe driving behavior.
The new three-leg roundabout at Otter Tail/Wadena County Road 92 opened to all travelers in late October. Although the roundabout is designed to improve safety and traffic flow, some drivers are not adjusting to the new traffic pattern.
The roundabout is somewhat unique—its north half is finished with permanent concrete, while the south half is temporary asphalt that will be rebuilt in 2026. Despite the temporary section, the roundabout is fully operational, and all traffic laws apply.
“Drivers on Hwy 10 are used to just cruising straight into town without stopping,” said one Wadena resident. “It’s a big change, but people are going way too fast. Someone’s going to get hurt if they don’t slow down and yield to others already in the roundabout.”
MnDOT reminds motorists of the following roundabout rules:
- Slow down as you approach.
- Yield to vehicles inside the roundabout; they have the right of way.
- Do not stop inside the roundabout.
- Use your turn signal when exiting.
The roundabout is part of a three-year, $52 million project to improve safety, traffic flow and underground infrastructure in Wadena. Construction will resume in spring 2026.
