Digital delivery is a significant transformation in the transportation industry. It is being widely adopted across the U.S. and abroad, where its use is often mandated by government. Digital delivery offers proven time and cost savings, safety improvements, and opportunities for productive collaboration. MnDOT is committed to being a responsible steward of state resources while working to meet the needs of the traveling public. It’s essential that we adopt this more efficient, technology-driven, model-centric method to deliver projects. MnDOT’s Digital Delivery Implementation Plan lays out the necessary tools and requirements for achieving mature, digital project delivery capabilities throughout the agency.
Implementation of digital delivery reinforces the agency’s values of collaboration, innovation, and safety. The essence of digital delivery is replacing PDF plan sheets with 3D models as contractual deliverables. This doesn’t mean models will be required for every project or that PDF plan sheets are going away. Rather, it means that the increased creation and use of models and digital workflows will become standard practice — with allowances for practical exceptions. MnDOT’s goal is delivering contractual models and leveraging advanced digital construction technologies and data sharing.
Data-rich models convey both graphical and non-graphical project information. The use of mobile data collection tools helps streamline data flows, and cloud-based collaboration technologies enable all project stakeholders to have real-time access to the same, up-to-date project and asset information. Digital delivery involves learning new processes, skills, and technology while complying with industry standards. The agency will provide the tools, training, and support to prepare our workforce for the use of digital delivery. MnDOT’s Digital Delivery Implementation Plan formalizes the agency’s strategic commitment to expanding our means and methods for delivering high-quality transportation projects on time and within budget.
